MIL-STD-461F is a very powerful and exacting set of standards that focuses on the control of electromagnetic interference of the entire project’s subsystems, to ensure that the overall function of the equipment is not hindered. In fact, the MIL-STD-461, especially after it was revised to the MIL-STD-461F, was tailored to be used in space systems applications.

For the purposes of space systems, the AIAA Standards Executive Council (SEC) redesigned their technical standards. This included folding in the MIL-STD-461F standard into their protocols and testing procedures, in order to guarantee a robust electromagnetic capability design that is suitable not just for high-reliability space missions. These missions can be anything from civilian or scientific on one end of the spectrum, to governmental and military on the other end.

The SEC committee worked with the MIL-STD-461F and MIL-STD-464A as a broad foundation because the EMI testing facilities already had much of the equipment needed to test the various aspects of the space system equipment. This would not only ease testing, but also lower the cost of testing the equipments design viability. As it stood at the time of reconstructing their the space industry’s standards, 80% of the requirements were already met by these two standards.

The part of the MIL-STD-461F that was tailored to the space systems platform was mostly the detailed test requirements, which needed to be toned down slightly, so the designer and user could readily adopt the space systems standards to any particular project. However, this tailoring for concision and ease relates mostly to the special needs of a space system. This includes:

  • A wider tolerance of radio receivers
  • The ability to control switching transients
  • A tighter tolerance on power source impedance
  • Extended range on conducted emissions
  • An added requirement to measure and control the load-induced transients
  • The added requirement of testing for ground plane interferences which may effect the return of the space system platform
  • The ability to control susceptibility to turn-on transients
  • Radiated emissions begins at 20MHz, and uses the biconical antenna, which dispenses with the 41 in rod antenna.

Editor’s Note: Is this the kind of technical post you’d like for your site? Great, we can do that! Do you want this post? Too bad, you can’t have it. 😉 It’s already been published now, so it would be duplicate content on your site, and wouldn’t help you at all. You need totally original content for content marketing to work. If you wanted the writer to tweak it a little, all you’d have to do is ask. That’s how our professional writing service works here at BlogMutt, where we work like a dog to fill up your blog with just the right content. We’re ready to put our professionalism to work for you.
