Small Business Tips for Developing a Big Voice

Are you a small or medium sized business trying to swim with the bigger fish in the sea? Maybe you’re new to the neighborhood or you’re just trying to get yourself heard above all of the other noise.

Here’s a quick tip: Try puffing yourself up just a bit.

In a recent article, Rosabeth Moss Kanter of the Harvard Business Review said, “One secret of successful business and social entrepreneurs is that they act bigger than they are.”

Now, the author wasn’t talking about projecting a false image or “faking it” in any sense. Remember The Wizard of Oz? The omnipotent “wizard” turned out to be just an ordinary man with a microphone and some other machines, hiding behind a big curtain. This is probably not the approach that Ms. Kanter had in mind.

Rather, acting bigger in the business sense is about being courageous and having the conviction to dream big and go after your goals. Once you have that inner self-assurance mastered, then you can project your confidence to the rest of the business world. You’ll be able to share your ideas and demonstrate your expertise through your actions.

Here are three small business tips made in Kanter’s article that we think could help your business when trying to distinguish your voice from the crowd.

First, focus on making an impact by clearly defining your mission and setting big goals, even if you’re not close to reaching them yet. Kanter writes:

Consider Brazilian entrepreneur Nizan Guanaes. Cultivating a larger-than-life presence is helping him grow a communications firm with impact and potential well beyond its size, country, and industry. About a dozen years ago, after selling a small advertising agency, he founded Grupo ABC, a communications group headquartered in Sao Paulo. After being advised he couldn’t take those letters, he trademarked the whole alphabet (the Portuguese version).

Next, network! Make connections and find partners, even if they’re technically your competitors. You can still share resources and even form coalitions that can compete with the big fish.

Finally, walk the walk. Don’t just puff out your chest and act bigger. Rather, create something of real value to your clients or customers.

The most important thing, in the author’s opinion, is your idea. A business of any size can have a great idea, so you don’t have to be big to have a big impact. You could start by sharing your expertise using your website and blog.
